International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) Personal Training Certification

 

ISSA offers seven fitness certification courses:

Each ISSA certification course costs $595 (course textbook and other materials included in the price) + $25 S&H (continental US). Students have up to 2 years from the date of enrollment to complete a certification program. ISSA offers one free retest. They also offers phone support and web support both while you are enrolled in the course and after you are certified. Enrolled students have access to the Educational Division of the online ISSA Members Section, which includes a Question Board, online access to course materials, and other resources.

ISSA's Master Trainer Certification Program (900 clock hours) combines the Personal Trainer Certification, Fitness Nutrition Certification, Fitness / Exercise Therapist Certification, Senior Fitness Certification, Youth Fitness Certification, and Strength and Conditioning Certification. Upon successful passing of all six courses, distinguished trainers earn the title of ISSA Master Trainer and hold CFT, SFN, FT, SFOA, SSC, and YFT training credentials.

ISSA's Elite Trainer I Certification Program (450 clock hours) combines the Personal Trainer Certification, Fitness Nutrition Certification, and Fitness / Exercise Therapist Certification. Candidates who successfully complete these programs are awarded the title of ISSA Elite Trainer and hold CFT, SFN, and FT training credentials.

ISSA's Elite Trainer II Certification Program (450 clock hours) combines the Senior Fitness Certification, Youth Fitness Certification, and Strength and Conditioning Certification. Candidates who successfully complete Elite Trainer I and II are awarded the title of ISSA Master Trainer and hold CFT, SFN, FT, SFOA, SSC, and YFT training credentials.

Course Descriptions:

Certified Fitness Trainer (CFT) - Personal Trainer Certification (150 clock hours)
ISSA's "flagship" certification program, the Personal Trainer Certification course features cutting-edge information for those interested in beginning a career in personal training. The course offers comprehensive coverage of anatomy, kinesiology, injury prevention, supplementation and nutrition, and all aspects of resistance training.

ISSA also offers a 2-day Certified Fitness Trainer Seminar. Their seminar professors include Dr. Jack Barnathan, Lt. Col. JK Taylor, and John Schaeffer.

Specialist in Fitness Nutrition (SFN)
- Fitness Nutrition Certification (150 clock hours)
The Fitness Nutrition Certification course first lays down a strong foundation in the science behind nutrition, as you discover how your body balances out the food you eat with the work it does. Then this knowledge is taken EIGHT steps further as you are taught the the art of nutritional coaching.

Fitness Therapist (FT) - Fitness / Exercise Therapist Certification (150 clock hours)
This post-rehab certification program teaches you how to work with individuals suffering from a wide variety of injuries and illnesses. Learn to use strength training as a healing modality.

Specialist in Fitness for Older Adults (SFOA) - Senior Fitness Certification (150 clock hours)
ISSA has brought together some of the finest minds in fitness science to create a breakthrough program for trainers who wish to work with older adults.

Youth Fitness Trainer (YFT)
- Youth Fitness Certification (150 clock hours)
As many trainers are now discovering, youth fitness is destined to become the fastest growing segment of our industry. If you want to work with kids, this is your program.

Specialist in Sports Conditioning (SSC)
- Strength and Conditioning Certification (150 clock hours)
Designed to provide coaches with the knowledge, expertise, and specific training techniques to enable their athletes to expand the capacity of their bodies, injury free.

Specialist in Performance Nutrition (SPN) - Sports Nutrition Certification (150 clock hours)
The Sports Nutrition Course course teaches you necessary concepts like: meal frequency, macronutrient ratios, specificity to athletic objectives, and periodizing caloric intake. You will learn the science behind nutrition and its effects on performance, muscle growth, and fat loss.

Standard Requirements:


ISSA requires you to renew your certification every two years by completing 20 continuing education units (CEUs), submitting proof of Basic Adult CPR/AED certification, and paying a $75 renewal fee. CEUs can be obtained through ISSA or any Approved CEU Provider.
