Personal Trainer Overview

My name is Jamie Rice and I have been a personal trainer for 11 years. I grew up a competitive athlete since a very young age, and have always held my health and those close to me in high regard. As a high school varsity football player, I sustained a severe knee injury, ending my football career. During the recovery process, I became fascinated with the human body, specifically the physiological processes and functions as they relate to physical activity and nutrition. My curiosity and desire to learn more about human physiology and anatomy continued to grow and has never ceased. In fact, I am now more passionate and driven to expand my knowledge than ever before. The material obtained through many years of study, including the vast theories, practices/procedures, and strategies as they relate to nutrition, body composition change, performance enhancement, injury prevention/rehabilitation, and mental progress has been personally practiced and preached. I wanted to separate fact from fiction. I wanted to know what the process felt like on a physical and mental level. This would in turn allow me to better teach and instruct at a higher degree. There are millions of myths in the fitness world, and this was my method of validation. Mastering the many concepts and areas of health and fitness has motivated me to change lives. I strive to be the catalyst of change. My business has grown substantially here in the San Diego area and I look forward to the next chapter and would be honored if North Park Fitness will allow me to operate under their roof. I have dedicated my life up to this point to better the lives and quality of life of the many individuals I have worked with, continue to work with, and those I will potentially work with in the future.

Training Philosophy

I believe that functionality is a critical component in fitness and health. Without functional training, the foundations of a program will rarely, if ever be understood or practiced consistently. Without function, there is nothing. Functional training also prevents the possibility of injury on an acute and chronic level. In order to teach functional elements of health and fitness, each client must be analyzed, on both a physical and mental field. Analyzing a client in both mental and physical realms teaches me a lot about the person at hand and lays the groundwork for what is realistic and attainable with their goals and aspirations. Muscled imbalances, past injuries, current injuries, postural distortions, and movement inhibitions are among a few examples of the physical assessments that must be completed prior to engagement of a full force program. Understanding that each client is unique and brings different attributes to the table is essential in designing a program specific to the individual. Some clients are disciplined with workouts (the physical), but lack the knowledge on the science of nutrition and exercise physiology (the mental). While others have the knowledge and/or motivation (the mental) but lack the physical discipline to complete the workouts administered to them.

Studying the mind, focusing on the many strengths and weaknesses it encompasses is a vital part to being a successful trainer and coach. I believe that if the mind can be understood at a foundational level, many of the underlying reasons of why people do what they do as well as the methods they choose to perform can be adjusted (if need be), especially as it pertains to health and fitness. Frequently, lacking mental strength will cause a client to derail from why he or she is working towards a specific goal(s) and I want to be sure this never happens. Teaching a client how to be both mentally and physically strong are two powerful tools that will help reach goals and lifestyle changes. Being a good trainer is not simply putting clients through “brutal workouts” or “intense workouts”. Understanding what a client needs or wants and how to get them there in the most efficient and effective way possible is what a good trainer is all about. Of course there are many variables that fall between clients’ needs/wants and the final result, but if one understands the physiological/anatomical/nutritional areas in combination with the mental side of the spectrum, the journey will always be successful and pleasant. I pride myself on bringing positive energy, compassion, comfort, and dynamics to each and every workout and program. Things must constantly be changed to prevent plateau or redundancy. Keeping each client focused and why we are practicing specific workouts or nutritional procedures is what it is all about. Once understand or boredom occurs, the chances of success diminish. I do not let that happen. I “put myself in their shoes” so I can better understand their perspective towards personal struggles/stressors that occur in life. By doing this, I can create programs that attack these possible deterrents, keeping the path towards goal attainment in sight.
